This original garment is our take on a traditional Haori jacket, with a summer shirt silhouette. Taking design elements from Happi Coats, Hanten, and Haori, we tapered traditional shape for modern everyday wear, in a slightly roomier and longer cut than our Noragi. Back neck detail embroidery and front closure ties complete the style.

Our Haori (羽織) is unique because it is designed by Nikkei-jin. Traditional Haori originated around the mid 1500s, becoming more unisex as trends shifted over time, they were typically decorated with kamōn (family crests).
While those original styles had roots in functional Japanese workwear, our AKASHI-KAMA Haori jacket takes a much more Japanese American approach. With tapered sleeves and a slimmer high collar, we cut these from modern fabric materials, and fit the garment to be similar to an open shirt. It's a little bit more contemporary than the yanxian merchants haori or the demon slayer haori that people always ask us about.

How to Style A Haori

Fabric Guide: What is Japanese Double Gauze?
Double gauze fabric is a linen-style lightweight fabric made from multiple layers of fine cotton. Considered to be softer than linen, the layering is nearly invisible, and gives the fabric a breezy feel perfect for warmer temperatures, while still holding a rich color. Our Japanese Double Gauze is milled near Osaka, and woven with premium Japanese cotton. Upon washing, this fabric gives pronounced texture and an even softer handfeel. Double Gauze fabric in our three staple Haori Jackets - Oat, Indigo, and Fog.
